At this seminar Kent Olofsson will discuss how he has used the concept and practices of acousmatic music and the Acousmonium – a loudspeaker orchestra – as a transformative tool in various forms of performing arts.

This seminar takes its starting point in the proposition that the concepts and practices of acousmatic music can be an artistic tool for transformations and challenging established concepts and practices in the performing arts. It will particularly focus on the Acousmonium, a loudspeaker orchestra concept that was developed in the 70s at the French Radio as an instrument and sound diffusion system to perform acousmatic music. This practice is not only about creating immersive sonic experiences but also about engaging with the acoustic conditions of the place where the music is performed and the use of different kinds of loudspeakers. While some technical discussions will be a necessary part of the seminar, the main focus will be on the artistic part: how the concept and practice of acousmatic music and the Acousmonium can be explored and used in various forms of performing arts. It is not only about sound design and music in this context but also how it may inform dramaturgy, narratives, acting, choreography, and performance.
Olofsson will discuss the topic based on his own artistic work and research in electroacoustic music, theatre, dance, and film.
Seminariet utgår från tesen att den akusmatisk musiken som begrepp och praktik kan vara ett konstnärligt verktyg för att förändra och utmana etablerade begrepp och praktiker inom scenkonsten. Fokus kommer särskilt att vara på Acousmoniumet, ett högtalarorkesterkoncept som utvecklades på 70-talet vid franska radion som ett instrument och system för ljuddiffusion för att framföra akusmatisk musik. Denna praktik handlar inte bara om att skapa immersiva ljudupplevelser, utan också om att interagera med de akustiska förhållandena i de rum och platser där musiken framförs och användningen av olika typer av högtalare. Även om vissa tekniska diskussioner kommer att vara en nödvändig del av seminariet, kommer huvudfokus att ligga på den konstnärliga delen: hur konceptet och praktiken inom akusmatisk musik och för Acousmoniumet kan utforskas och användas i olika former av scenkonst. I detta sammanhang handlar det inte bara om ljuddesign och musik, utan också om hur det kan påverka dramaturgi, berättande, skådespeleri, koreografi och performance.
Olofsson kommer att diskutera ämnet utifrån sitt eget konstnärliga arbete och sin forskning inom elektroakustisk musik, teater, dans och film.
